Oracle SA is realigning its South African operations with its UK division, according to Oracle SA marketing director Mark Gower. The process could result in greater investment into the local market from Oracle.
Gower says Oracle has taken a particular interest in Africa.
“Oracle has taken a particular interest in Africa,” says Gower, adding that local channel strategy has met with great success. “However, it is impossible to have the depth of skills in SA that we require.”
He says the UK operation has a “massive depth of skills”, particularly in e-government, which Oracle will leverage locally.
Kerrigan's position to be decide next week.
Gower notes that skills will not only be imported, but exported too. Insurance-savvy South African Oracle staffers can expect their skills to be deployed in the UK, as can lecturers and support staff.
The realignment is the reason for Oracle senior VP Ian Smith's direct involvement in the South African operation. Smith answers directly to Larry Ellison.
Smith's work in the local market has brought current Oracle SA MD Lenore Kerrigan's position into question, although the company reports that it is in negotiation with Kerrigan over her future at Oracle SA. A firm decision regarding Kerrigan is expected next week, after the board convenes.
