ICL South Africa, Dar Es Salaam conclude SmartCity agreement
FUJITSU
PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY MEROPA COMMUNICATIONS
[ 28 November 2001 ] - ICL South Africa, the e-business solutions company, has secured a deal with the University of Dar Es Salaam to the value of over R1 million. The agreement constitutes the ICL smart card solution, SmartCity.

The implementation will provide nearly 5 000 students and staff with one multi-functional card that can be used for all necessary transactions and operations within the buildings, whether those transactions and operations have financial implications or not. It also provides a cashless environment to alleviate the problems associated with cash handling, such as pilfering, security and cash handling costs.

Further benefits include the loading of government grants directly onto a student's smart card for use within the University environment. Existing legacy systems (eg Library and Financial systems) will also be integrated to the SmartCity system.

ICL South Africa has entered into an agency contract with Intrinsic Technology to represent SmartCity in Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique and Angola. According to the contract, Intrinsic Technology will be responsible for first line support on all SmartCity implementations in those countries where Intrinsic Technology has offices.
