First virtual animal expo opens Thursday
BY NEWSBYTES
[ 29 March 2001 ] - Virunga, the animal protection and conservation portal, is hosting, what is claimed to be the first virtual animal expo online, from 29 to 31 March.

Tim Phillips, a spokesperson for the Web portal, told Newsbytes that the three-day event aims to attract Web users to the portal, and help them discover more about animal conservation, as well as the animals the organization is seeking to protect.

The free exhibition has three virtual floors to explore: the animall, where Web users can purchase cruelty free products; the organizations floor, where users can view campaign information and live chat to around 70 of the world's biggest animal charities; and the conference hall, which has streaming video and discussion areas,

Phillips said that the organization's name is based on the Virunga tribe of gorillas, which are close to extinction, in the jungles of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and which starred in the "Gorillas in the Mist" movie of the 1990s.

The name was chosen, he added, because it was unusual, and is a poignant reminder of what the organization is about.

Phillips said that, once the interactive event finishes on the Web, it will remain in place, as a static attraction for all Web users.

Mark Austen, Virunga's CEO, meanwhile, said that Animal Expo 2001 has been specifically created to provide a virtual forum for the protection and conservation of animals worldwide.

"You can chat directly with almost 70 animal charities, view their campaign footage and buy green and cruelty free products online," he said, adding that the first day of the Expo (Thursday) will be themed around schools and education.

"We are linking up with Schoolmaster.net, an education portal with access to 4,000 schools and around 400,000 pupils across Europe," he said.

The Expo's Web site is at http://www.virunga.net/expo
