M-Web, InfoSat exchange user bases
BY STAFF REPORTER
[ 16 August 2001 ] - M-Web is again focusing on its core strengths in the consumer market, with a deal to split users with satellite Internet solutions provider InfoSat.

M-Web subsidiary Siyanda and InfoSat have reached an agreement to exchange user bases, with InfoSat taking over the Siyanda corporate user base and Siyanda taking the InfoSat residential user base.

The Siyanda satellite platform will be discontinued and users will be migrated on to the InfoSat system. M-Web will also sell the brand name ‘Siyanda` to InfoSat. Future M-Web satellite connectivity for residential users will be included under the company`s Broadband portfolio of products.

“The decision follows a review of the benefits of joining forces,” says William Marais, COO of M-Web eMedia. “In particular, this arrangement will allow us to focus on respective core competencies. M-Web`s expertise lies in content aggregation and consumer-oriented services, while InfoSat`s expertise lies in a corporate focus as well as developing and providing state-of-the-art satellite technology.”

The move doubles the number of users in each service`s focus market. However, InfoSat MD (Commercial) Eduard du Plessis says he cannot disclose user numbers at this stage. “I can safely say that InfoSat is the market leader in terms of its services offered using satellite technology,” he says.

“With three teleports currently in place servicing the European and Southern African markets, M-Web`s future growth requirements will be secured by InfoSat`s expertise. Our platform has more than enough capacity to continue providing satellite services to the consumer base as well as to our corporate customers.”

He adds that InfoSat is confident in handing over its consumer base to M-Web, because the company is well placed to meet the demands of this market in terms of call centres, communication and administration.

InfoSat and M-Web are still discussing other areas of co-operation within the area of satellite technology. Du Plessis says more announcements can be expected within a month.
