iBurst taking market by storm
BY RODNEY WEIDEMANN, ITWEB TELECOMS EDITOR
[Johannesburg, 6 January 2005] - Wireless Business Solutions (WBS), which launched its wireless broadband offering called iBurst at the end of last year, claims to have already signed up over 1 500 clients.

“I am very happy with the success attained by my team, as they worked very hard over the festive season – traditionally a very slow time – to achieve this milestone,” says COO Thami Mtshali.

“We have set a goal of 15 000 customers by the end of this year, although at the rate we are currently experiencing uptake, thanks in part to referrals from satisfied clients, we will probably have even more.”

According to WBS, iBurst offers high-speed Internet access through a connection card for a laptop or a modem-like device for a desktop PC and customers can get speeds of up to 1Mbps.

Mtshali says that the major metropolitan areas of South Africa are already covered, with a network presence in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban, and that by the end of this year, WBS hopes to have smaller cities, such as Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein and George, covered too.

“At the same time we will be patching up and improving our network in the areas which already have coverage, in order to ensure seamless operation for our customers,” he says.

“iBurst has also been voted the best wireless broadband option in a vote carried out by users on the local Web site www.myadsl.co.za.”

He says that the few negative comments that the company has received centre on the fact that customers want the option of using the product for voice as well.

“We will certainly be focusing on the advantages of voice over IP this year, and we already have several products designed to capitalise on the liberalisation of the market,” says Mtshali.

“Another product we will be launching later this year is a VPN solution for the corporate market.”
