The Ya-Ya Sisters come to town
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood is a movie about the joy of overcoming pain, and the pain of living life without joy.
What do you expect to happen when a deluded, spoiled, self-centred old woman reads an article in the world-acclaimed Time magazine quoting her daughter describing her as an irresponsible, uncaring mother who messed up her life?

There could be several possibilities. She might file a defamation lawsuit against the magazine for dragging her “good name” in the mud and for misquoting her “loving” daughter.

Or she might simply call up the writer of the offending article and tell him she thinks he's a dirty, rotten scoundrel. Right? Well, wrong.

This is the storyline of the up coming Warner Brothers' dramedy, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, which opens at Numetro cinemas on 5 October.

Sandra Bullock plays Sidda Lee Walker, a young adult playwright who is battling with her abusive past, at the hands of her alcoholic mother, Vivi, played by Ellen Burstyn.

 VITAL STATS

Director: Callie Khouri
Cast: Ellen Burstyn, Sandra Bullock, Ashley Judd, Maggie Smith
Running time: 116min

A Southern comedy drama about life, love and family which follows a group of lifelong friends as they stage a rather unorthodox intervention to help a young playwright unravel the truth about her eccentric mother, find forgiveness and come to terms with her difficult past.

The young woman has gone to live far from her mother, to avoid her melodramatic and drinking escapades. This Time magazine article, instead of throwing them further apart, instead acts as a catalyst towards uniting them.

But that is not until the Ya-Ya Sisters step in to make the young woman understand her mother much better, to let her see Vivi's good side. The Ya-Ya sisters, on the other hand, take a tough stance against Vivi, to show her it is never too late to repair the strained relationship between herself and her daughter.

The excellent acting skills of Bullock, Ashley Judd, Ellen Burstyn, Maggie Smith and James Garner bring some life into this rather lukewarm storyline. Oh, and the beautiful landscape of the American countryside compensates for the tired, almost grotesque faces of the four older main characters. Of course this does not include the vivacious, beautiful Bullock.

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisters is riddled with bucketfuls of humour, but also touches on the serious sides of life, the most notable being the emotional scars of an abusive childhood.

These haunting psychological scars affect Sidda so much that she shudders at the thought of starting her own family. It's not until she deals with her past adequately that she starts getting her life back in one piece again.

The unity among the Ya-Ya sisters, who for a lifetime go through turbulent and great times together, shows just how beneficial a good bond of friendship can turn out to be.

I won't discuss the whole Ya-Ya Sisters thing. It's something I would rather let you figure out in the movie itself.

Not a bad movie, but I don't think lots of men would relish this 117-minute offering. Best suited for the sisters, perhaps.
