Ten burning questions for the week
BY RODNEY WEIDEMANN, ITWEB TELECOMS EDITOR
How bizarre is it that 80 years after Clarence Darrow had to defend the theory of evolution in a Tennessee court, the supposedly greatest nation on earth still has states that want to turn back the clock and teach creationism, rather than Darwin's theory?

Why do they insist on having parking systems in shopping centres where you pay at the station before you leave, but the card machines at the exit are so unreliable that you have to have a person standing there anyway to make sure your card works – wouldn't it be simpler to have a pay office at the exit? (From reader Greg Q)

How is it possible for the average South African citizen to trust the police force when you hear stories like that of the four policemen and a reservist who are to appear in court for allegedly hijacking a truck near Pienaarsrivier in Limpopo?

And surely the state must in some way be held liable for damages after a woman was gang raped by three policemen who were supposed to be helping her get home – after all, if you cannot feel safe when you're with the police, how can you ever feel safe?

Isn't it heart warming – if a little bizarre – to hear about the abandoned Kenyan baby that was rescued from death by a stray dog, which looked after it?

How funny is it that the Cape Town city council may have to refund motorists some R3 million in traffic fines, after Labat Traffic Solutions, which handles traffic fines for the council, failed to notify offenders within the required period, making them all invalid?

Isn't it obvious to the government that launching a radio ad that implies that any motorist knocking over a pedestrian will be charged with culpable homicide, irrespective of who is at fault, will effectively decrease the odds of the motorist either reporting the accident or waiting for the police? (From reader Zanoni L)

It seems that at last the Yanks and the Europeans are waking up to the fact that 4x4 sports utility vehicles (SUVs) are a waste of money, with sales dropping for the first time on both sides of the Atlantic. Now how much longer do we have to wait before logic and intelligence kicks in here in SA?

And speaking of urban SUVs, when will SA get its own version of people like London mayor, Ken Livingstone, who described 4x4 owners in the city as "complete idiots", or the UK-based Alliance Against Urban 4x4s, which is aiming to make them "as socially unacceptable as drink-driving"?

It's good to hear that the SA Human Rights Commission has thrown the book at a Broederstroom holiday resort that refused entry to a white couple with two black children, after all, it's more than a decade into the new South Africa, so surely there is just no excuse for such behaviour anymore?
